Background
John Ircandia has been a partner at our Calgary office since 1984. John was
admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1979. He graduated from the University of British
Columbia Law School in 1978. Prior to that, he received a Bachelor of Arts from
the University of British Columbia.

- Since completing his articles in 1979, John has practised in the Litigation
Department with an emphasis over the past ten years in bank-related litigation,
including receiverships, bankruptcies, foreclosures and reorganizations as
well as oil and gas litigation.

- Since completing his articles with Howard, Mackie in 1979, John has practised
in the Litigation Department with an emphasis over the past 20 years in bank-related
litigation, including receiverships and reorganizations, as well as oil and
gas litigation.
- John is an experienced civil litigator, having argued cases before the Alberta
and Saskatchewan Courts of Queen's Bench and Courts of Appeal, as well as
the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Representative of matters conducted by John include the following:
- John has acted on behalf of Canadian chartered banks in Court proceedings
relative to corporate arrangements and reorganizations;
- He has represented lending institutions in lender liability claims and
environmental liability matters;
- He has represented Canadian chartered banks and other lenders in security
enforcement proceedings, including receivership, bankruptcy and foreclosure
matters;
- He has represented Canadian oil and gas companies in litigation respecting
the acquisition of oil and gas properties, ownership issues, operatorship
challenges, environmental concerns and related matters;
- John has acted in respect of multi-jurisdictional lawsuits, receiverships,
bankruptcies and proceedings under the Companies Creditors Arrangements
Act;
- He has represented receivers, trustees in bankruptcy and accounting
firms in litigation matters;
- John has represented accountants in hearings before panels of the Institute
of Chartered Accountants;
- John has represented commercial landlords respecting litigation matters;
- He has represented corporate directors in liability matters;
- John has represented plaintiffs in personal injury litigation, including
fatal accidents;
- John, together with Randall Block of the Howard, Mackie firm, successfully
represented Stampeder Exploration Ltd. in one of the more significant
cases before the Alberta Courts in recent years, namely Colborne Capital
Corporation, James T. Grenon and Murray Edwards v. Westar Petroleum Ltd.,
Stampeder Exploration Ltd. et al.
