Ordinance Improves Registration System - International Law Office

The Business Registration (Amendment) Ordinance 1999 came into effect on April 1 1999 and has amended the Business Registration Ordinance in the following respects (among others):

• The Commissioner of Inland Revenue may serve notice on any person deemed to be a person carrying on business;
  
  
• The Commissioner of Inland Revenue may make available an index containing particulars of businesses that have been registered under the Business Registration Ordinance;
  
  
• A person who makes an application for registration of a business under Section 5(1) of the Business Registration Ordinance may register a Chinese name and/or an English name;
  
  
• The Commissioner of Inland Revenue may remove the entry of any business from the register if that business should not have been registered;
  
  
• The Commissioner of Inland Revenue may call upon any person to pay the fee and the levy for registration of a business or branch if the commissioner has not received notification of cessation of the business or branch.

The Hong Kong government passed the Business Registration (Amendment) Ordinance with the aim of streamlining, and thereby improving, the company registration system.
