The Albanian government is developing a project for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
In January 2010 the Council of Ministers issued a decision(1) establishing the National Nuclear Agency as an authority under the responsibility of the council in order to progress the development of the country's nuclear programme.
The National Nuclear Agency is tasked with the preparation, supervision and development of the national nuclear programme.

The Council of Ministers' decision represents the first step towards the establishment of a specific authority to develop the country's nuclear programme. The decision has also amended the competences of the National Agency for Natural Resources(2) regarding cooperation with other national and international authorities to develop the national nuclear programme.
