After seeing the benefits of third-generation (3G) technology in other countries, the Department of Telecommunications recently issued its Guidelines for the Auction and Allotment of Spectrum for 3G Telecom Services. On the same date, the department also issued its Detailed Guidelines for the Auction and Allotment of Spectrum for Broadband Wireless Access Services.

The Indian telecommunications market is growing exponentially. The total number of telephone connections (wireline and wireless) rose by 8 million between March and April 2008 to a total of 308.5 million. With such an increase in the market, even the regulatory authorities are grappling to provide the market players with more flexibility.
