Obtaining Spanish citizenship: Sephardic Jews

November 23 2012

The term 'Sephardi' originates from a Hebrew word and refers to the descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews who lived or live in the Iberian Peninsula.

Those of Sephardic Jewish origin have the right to apply for nationality after two years of legal residence in Spain.

An applicant must provide the following documentation:

  • application form;
  • Spanish foreigner ID card;
  • passport; and
  • birth certificate.

In order to prove Sephardic status, the applicant must provide:

  • evidence that he or she is included in the list of protected Sephardic families in Spain or is a direct descendant of such a family;
  • evidence of membership of the Sephardic community and participating in Sephardic traditions and culture (eg, language); and
  • a certificate from the Israelite community which is recognised in Spain and which attests that the applicant is a member of the Sephardic Jewish religion.
