On 10 September 2019 the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) imposed:

  • a fine of RM200,000 each on two airline operators, AirAsia Berhad and AirAsia X Berhad (collectively, AirAsia); and
  • a fine of RM1.179 million on the operator of KLIA and klia2, Malaysian Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd (MASSB).

The fines were imposed on AirAsia for charging credit card, debit card and online banking processing fees separately from base fares in breach of Paragraph 3(2) of the Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016, which requires full disclosure of the airfare's final price. The fines imposed were for breaches that occurred from 1 June 2019 to 9 August 2019.

MAVCOM found that MASSB had failed to meet several of the service level requirements regarding airport users (including passengers, airlines and ground handlers) under the Implementation of the Airports Quality of Service Framework Directive at KLIA and klia2 from January 2019 to March 2019.
