On 18 January 2019 the Council of Government came to an agreement on the status of British citizens living in Luxembourg in the event that the United Kingdom leaves the European Union on 29 March 2019 without a deal.

In its decision, the Council of Government referred to the government statement issued on 18 January 2019 entitled "The United Kingdom's Withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit): Preparations on a national level". The statement contains detailed information about the two possible Brexit scenarios: one in which the United Kingdom achieves a withdrawal agreement and one in which it does not.

According to the government statement, answers to questions concerning the status of British nationals living in Luxembourg, as well as Luxembourg nationals living in the United Kingdom, are available through:

  • an information pack, which is available on the government's website; and
  • a dedicated frequently asked questions (FAQs) section, which is available on the 'Guichet.lu' website. These FAQs will be updated as soon as new information becomes available.

The government statement specifies that any action that British citizens living in Luxembourg must undertake will also be published on the above websites as the situation develops.
