On 7 May 2020 the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) introduced initiatives to ease the burden on construction industry players affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO).(1) Subsequently, on 19 January 2021 the CIDB announced that it is extending several of these initiatives with the aim of easing the burden on contractors that intend to register or renew their registrations with the CIDB.

Relaxation of registration renewal requirements

The CIDB previously outlined several exemptions to the requirements for renewing local contractor registrations – namely, exemptions from obtaining:

  • Continuous Contractor Development (CCD) points;
  • Business Management and Facility Management competency certification; and
  • Contractor Code of Ethics and Integrity Course certification.

The abovementioned exemptions, which were initially scheduled to end on 31 December 2020, have now been extended to 31 March 2021.

Deduction of required CCD points

In addition to the extension of the above exemptions, the CIDB will implement a 50% deduction of the number of CCD points required to renew a local contractor registration.(2) This deduction will take effect on 1 April 2021.

Comment

The CIDB has stated that its extension of these initiatives is subject to feedback from industry players that such initiatives are still necessary for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing MCO. On that basis, it seems that the CIDB's initiatives have assisted industry players; thus, their extension will likely be welcome news.(3)
