The Department of Merchant Shipping (DMS) has announced the standards and procedures that it intends to apply in order to implement the 2010 Manila Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers regarding the revalidation of certificates of competency beyond December 31 2016.

Applicants must present certificates of completion of training in specified areas according to their speciality with applications to revalidate their certificates of competency beyond December 31 2016. The certificates must be issued by the DMS or the equivalent authority of a country whose certificates of competency are recognised by Cyprus. On presentation of the required documents, the applicant's certificate of competency will be extended for up to five years from the date of the previous revalidation without any further requirement for examinations and sea service.

No evidence of completion of training need be submitted with applications for extensions that will expire before January 1 2017.
