There were a number of high-profile cybersecurity incidents in Mexico in 2019, including a breach of 540 million Facebook user profiles stored by Cultura Coletiva and a ransomware attack on state oil company Pemex, with cyber criminals demanding 565 bitcoins (approximately $4.9 million).

Cyberattacks on public entities and private companies in Mexico look set to grow exponentially in 2020. However, Mexico has no national cybersecurity plan, so the private sector has instead introduced self-regulatory schemes to try and protect itself against cyberattacks.
