Choon-Won Lee, widely known as CW Lee, is a Korean lawyer
who is winning recognition for his outstanding performance
in the fields of maritime, insurance and international trade law.
His practice involves all aspects of shipping, admiralty,
insurance, reinsurance, aviation, shipbuilding and ship finance
law. He represents most of the major protection and indemnity
clubs and numerous shipowners, including large Korean
shipping companies. He has also worked on numerous cases
with insurers and aviation industry leaders, both in Korea and
Mr Lee has handled various noteworthy shipping and
maritime matters. These include the
Hyundai Fortune
one of the largest casualty cases in international shipping –
the total amount in dispute was approximately $1.5 billion,
including cargo claims of $500 million. In the above case,
Mr Lee successfully persuaded the Korean court to dismiss
all claims against the owners of the vessel and obtained a nil
assessment decision in the limitation proceeding.
When the international shipping market began to fluctuate
in late 2008, Mr Lee became actively engaged in charterparty
disputes and the rehabilitation or bankruptcy of shipping
companies. More recently, his practice has focused on
shipbuilding and collision matters.
Mr Lee received his BA from the Seoul National University
School of Law in 1988 and an LLM from the University of
Southampton in England in 2003. He began his career at Lee
& Ko in 1993 and worked for Choi & Kim for about 12 years.
He is now a partner in one of the most respected maritime
teams in Korea.
